APPRECIATING WHISKEY

Look

Before you do anything, look at the whiskey. You can learn a lot from its color. Generally speaking, the darker the whiskey, the older it is because whiskey gets its color from contact with the oak barrel during aging. The type of barrel matters as well. For example, a scotch whisky being aged in a bourbon barrel that has been used several times is not going to pick up as much color from the barrel. If that same whisky was put in a used sherry or port cask, it will pick up some of those colors in addition to the oak barrel.

Smell

You can smell more from your whiskey than you will ever be able to taste. Most master distillers and blenders work primarily by nosing, not tasting. So, always smell your whiskey before you taste it. Don’t shove your nose into the glass or the alcohol will be too dominant. Gently raise the glass to your nose until you begin capturing the aroma. Think about what you smell. Closing your eyes can help you differentiate between aromas.

Taste

Make sure you coat your entire tongue and let it linger on the palate before swallowing. Does it taste the way it smells? Do the flavors evolve on the palate or stay the same? Does the whiskey feel thick or thin? What flavors do you taste? After you swallow, does the flavor linger or quickly fade away? Sometimes the alcohol is too intense to fully appreciate the whiskey. Add a couple drops of water at a time to the whiskey till you find your comfort zone. Not only does the water lower the proof of the whiskey, it can help open up the aromas of the whiskey.

FAQS

Long line design element with two small lines above

Where are you located?

We are in downtown Lakeland in the old federal post office (hence our name!), a beautiful historic building. We feel so lucky to fill such a special space. We are on the corner of Lemon and Tennessee.

Do you take reservations?

We are a first-come first-serve restaurant, so we do not take reservations daily. However, if you have a considerably large party (over 10 guests), we would appreciate it if you called us on your way in to help us accommodate you! This "call ahead" helps our staff prepare a table for your party size. The larger the party, the more of a heads up we like!

What's the parking situation?

Like most of downtown's restaurants, we do not have our own lot. We rely on public parking.

Are you dog friendly at Mojo?

You know it! Don't get mad at us if we excitedly serve your pups before we serve you. We always have water bowls for dogs on hand! We have an expansive patio that's perfect for a dog who loves lounging.

Is it possible to reserve the entire restaurant?

We have rented out our restaurant in the past! We'd be happy to do it again. Call us here at the restaurant or our catering department to inquire about us hosting your event!

DO YOU HAVE A HAPPY HOUR?

All hours spent at Mojo are happy ones, but the Happiest of Hours occur Monday-Friday from 3-6 where we offer $1 OFF our beer and wine, and $2 OFF signature cocktails and house liquor.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PULLED PORK AND NORTH CAROLINA PORK?

Our Pulled Pork platter is smoked pork shoulder that we pull to order. There is no sauce served on it and it's way too tender to slice. North Carolina Pork is where we finely chop that same pork shoulder and then toss it in our housemade Carolina Vinegar to give it a tangy bite. Our "baby red" slaw (cabbage, ketchup, and sugar) is served on the side to give it crunchy textural contrast.
